I can’t believe what I heard! Did someone really say that? And, like so much on social media or talk shows nowadays, totally without evidence of course.
The person categorically stated that Business as Mission has failed.
Think about it for a minute.
- The simplest definition is one I hear Bill Job say – BAM is walking with God at work. Certainly, no argument there!
- God created work. Man is told to create wealth; mission is the mission of God (Missio dei). None of that is debatable, is it?
- Jesus said – “Love your neighbor.” Isn’t that what we do when we create jobs, build relationships, and serve our neighbors in the marketplace?
- Jesus also said – “Make disciples” and that is a mandate for all believers, and I have seen that happen with the establishment of churches through a business in Eastern Europe, North Africa, Central Asia, East Asia, Indonesia, South Africa.
Failure yes – if business not done God’s way
Failure yes – if we don’t intentionally pursue the integration of faith and spiritual disciple making
Failure yes – if business is not owned by God
But the failure of BAM – nonsense!
So, let’s be careful of fake news and people who pretend to know what they are talking about. Let’s be ready to love them, patiently educate them, and help them understand that in short – God expects us to work, he expects us to love our neighbors, and he wants us to help others to follow Him with worship and love. All the while, may we be reminded that it is the Holy Spirit who draws people to himself (Titus 3: 5-6; John 16: 8,9). Praise God that all of this is happening all over the world!
