In a May 1963 Time magazine article, entitled, “Barth in Retirement,” theologian Karl Barth stated that he advised young theologians to “take your Bible and take your newspaper, and read both.” It is an oft-quoted statement, sometimes noted as “take the Bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other.”
Not bad advice for Business as Mission operatives. We need constant reminders of what God says, and we need to be on the lookout for needs and opportunities. So, what might that look like in today’s world?
- The Bible teaches us to love God, love our neighbor, and care for the poor.
- The Bible teaches to share the Good News and make disciples.
- Newspapers (social media outlets) tell us what is going on in the world.
- News outlets teach us where human needs are, often in our back yard.
Reminder for all of us with a BAM Mindset: Read the Bible and the News Outlets.
